Supporting people and organisations affected by substance use
THE DRUGS GUY
Giving advice and support to people who use substances, or who are affected by others' use

ABOUT ME
-
I have worked with problem drug users for 17+ years. I've supported homeless heroin and crack injectors in central London within a substance misuse outreach team. It was during this time that I completed a diploma in higher education for substance use and misuse at the Thames Valley University. Here I learned about the many reasons people slip into problematic substance use. I then went on to manage the outreach team and worked closely with social services, local government and the police to develop better strategies for working with vulnerable homeless drug users.
-
On completion of my diploma I went travelling to research how other cultures deal with drug dependency and addiction. This journey took me to the Thamkrabok monastery in Thailand where they administer a herbal concoction to detoxify opiate (heroin) addicts. This induces a process of extreme vomiting, followed by heat treatments and rituals designed to eliminate toxins from the body. I also visited Vietnam where they use a very secretive herbal tablet called Heantos to detox their opiate dependents. I wrote my final dissertation on an African root called Ibogaine, which is still used today in certain countries to aid detoxification and recovery.
-
On returning to the UK I moved to Bristol and started working alongside GPs and other health professionals prescribing methadone to Heroin users. Creating care plans and risk screens and encouraging people to engage in treatment and recovery day programs, it was clear to me during most of my assessments that the issues all started when they were young.
This guided me to fulfill the need for preventative work with young people to help avoid the long term fallout of drug dependency.
-
I have been working in schools and colleges across Bristol for the past 4 years and feel passionately about the positive role people like myself can have on the future of our youth. I'm regularly amazed at how open to positive change young people can be if they are just given the right spark and direction.
-
Right now in Bristol the council are making major cuts to funding for substance support in all schools. I feel this is very shortsighted and potentially puts young people at a higher risk of problematic substance use. I feel this education and guidance is essential in helping young people make informed choices about their own risk taking and ultimately their future, especially at a time when the NHS has recognised a significant rise in illegal substance use among 11-16 year olds. This is one of the reasons I have set up my own company to make sure this valuable support stays in place for our youth.
-
Reiki- I have been studying Reiki for around 15 years and I am fully qualified and insured to give treatments. This can really compliment regular 1-1 sessions. As well as in certain rehabs, it is now commonly used by the NHS in hospitals and can be effective in relieving both physical and emotional symptoms such as pain, stress, anxiety and depression.

I am Fully DBS certified and Police checked to work with all vulnerable people

WHAT I OFFER

1-1 CONFIDENTIAL SUPPORT
Creating a safe and confidential space for people to talk openly about their own or others substance use
I have worked with substance users for more than 17 years. Young people often find it difficult to talk to parents, carers, teachers or other professionals about their substance use as they may meet with judgement, disappointment and disapproval. This can lead to them becoming isolated and lacking in knowledge regarding the risks. My approach is to offer open and honest discussions about their use without the normal emotional attachment from a loved one etc. This is then backed up by my extensive knowledge of the different effects and risks from all the different drug types. They can then make more informed choices regarding their health and future.

FAMILY WORK
Working with families to improve communication and understanding of problematic drug use in the home.
I'm a fully trained Whole Family Worker and have conducted many family meetings to discuss issues arising from substance use at home (either child or parent/carer), working in a 'think family' approach to improve understanding and communication about individuals feelings and behaviours. I regularly arrange multi agency meetings at schools and colleges with pupils, family members, teachers and social workers as part of a 'team around the family' approach. This enables the individual members of the family to talk about their personal perspective of the issues at hand and also highlights to the professionals involved what support would be best suited.

TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY
Effective ways of working with young people around substance use.
I have provided training and consultancy to teachers and other health professionals for the past 7 years. I regularly train GPs in more effective ways to work with young substance users, providing up to date knowledge around current drug trends. This includes the increased prevalence of illegal prescription drugs being brought by young people on the web as well as cannabis use and its potential effects on the developing brain to the increased potency and associated risks of drugs like MDMA (ecstasy)
Training can be designed to meet specific needs of any youth provider or can just be a general overview of modern drug use among our young people today.

INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL GAMES
I've designed a really effective game to use with teenagers based on top trumps.
This game is perfect to use with teenagers who may already be exposed to drug use. It's a great ice breaker for workshops, during PSHE drugs education and for youth workers and other professionals who want to engage in drugs awareness conversations. It consists of 18 drug specific cards and 18 cards with descriptions of drugs and their risks to match with the picture cards. Drugs classification cards and drug types (stimulant, depressants and hallucinogens) can be grouped by participants. There are easy to follow instructions for the facilitator. These cards go down really well with young people and are a great tool for learning and very easy to use. Tried and tested!

Reiki is a form of energy work which focusses on a persons energetic centres of their body.
It is a complimentary therapy which can work well for some people, alongside their conventional treatments. It was developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui of Japan and based on energy work stretching back in ancient history.
It is recognised and widely used across the UK by the NHS as a potentially effective intervention for cancer patients. Also in drug treatment units across the globe. It is known to help relieve stress, anxiety and other emotional health issues. It can also work well with pain management and to release emotional 'blocks'
I have been studying Reiki for around 15 years and actively practising for the past 4 years. I am fully qualified and insured to give treatments and currently work at Bristol Drugs Project and Stonebridge Park Hostel offering treatments to people struggling with substance issues. I also combine it with my private 1-1 work and give treatments to staff who work with vulnerable and challenging people.
The results speak for themselves, with my patients regularly surprised how effective it can be, often reporting a feeling of deep relaxation and calm following a treatment. As well as feeling more clear headed and grounded.
Its normal for people to feel sceptical prior to their 1st treatment but this is almost always resolved once they decide to try.

THIS IS WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT ME
Barney really helped me to understand the impact my drug use was having on my education. He was a great listener and really knows his stuff around all the different drugs and their effects and risks. I have made some changes now and feel much more in control of my life.

Pupil following 1-1 work

Barney has worked in my school for the past 3 years and has done some excellent work with the students here. He is very caring and treats the pupils with a high level of respect and empathy. He has helped a lot of young people to look at their own drug use and has also supported pupils to understand and cope better with their parents substance use. He is very professional and always willing to give advice support to both pupils and teachers.
Deputy Head of Bedminster Down school

Fantastic morning with Barney, he gave a really useful overview of drug use in young people relevant to Bristol and nationally/internationally also. He has a really caring and non-judgemental attitude which facilitated the discussion and dealt well with comments from one attendee who had a somewhat opposite and unhelpful attitude to certain aspects of the topic. He presented lots of useful information in a format which was easy to understand for those unfamiliar with some of the terminology.
GP following training

Very useful workshop. Barney was approachable and informative. Involved delegates and tailored the session according to learning needs. Could ask stupid questions, which signifies how approachable Barney is.
